You shouldn’t have to think about what it takes to keep the lights on – that’s our job. One way we’re doing that is by is investing in advanced technologies to build a more modern electric system.
In the age of the smart phone and apps for everything, our electric grid is getting smarter, too. Smart grid technologies, including smart meters, are helping us better predict and prevent outages and, when outages do occur, identify them faster and more accurately so we can speed restoration.
If your lights go out, we want to be the first to know so we can minimize the disruption to you and get your lights back on quickly. When we complete our smart meter installations and grid upgrades and the system is fully operational, we expect to be able to initiate restoration ourselves most of the time.
How are we going to reach that goal? Thanks to smart meters and a smarter grid, our engineers and analysts have more ways than ever before to spot and prevent problems before they occur. And when they do, our teams in our Customer Care centers and in the field will be better able to react fast.
For example, if you call now to tell us your power is out, and you have a smart meter, the first thing we will do is “ping” the meter from our Customer Care Center to see if it’s receiving electrical current. If there is no power going to the meter, we’ll send a crew to get the lights back on. If the meter is receiving electricity, but your lights are out, it means the problem is within your house. If that’s the case, our Customer Care representative will assist you in resetting your main breaker—it could be that simple.
When should you call FPL?
Our technology is getting smarter, but we still want to hear from you if you’re experiencing an outage or if there’s a situation we need to know about—if a car hits a pole, for instance, and a wire is down. Having the right information helps us assign the right resources to fix the problem.
Our focus is on keeping your service reliability high and your bills low—now and for years to come. Remember, if you have an activated smart meter, you can also access your personal Energy Dashboard to take more control over your energy use and monthly bills.
