I think we all approach a new year with a sense of anticipation and excitement about what’s to come. For us here at FPL, we’re excited about each new day because it’s a chance to continue making a difference.
For us, this means not only making sure that when you flip the switch the lights go on, but also working to keep your bill the lowest in the state and offering ways for you to save even more. At the same time, it means doing our part to support the energy needs of Florida today, and in the years that follow.
For the past eighty-seven years, we’ve had the privilege of powering Florida and contributing to its evolving history – from meeting the growing needs of our state’s early generations to fueling Florida’s future in 2013 and beyond.
Fired up for the future
Today, we’re energized by the many signs of progress already underway.
Just a few weeks ago, we fired up the turbines at our new natural-gas powered Cape Canaveral Next Generation Clean Energy Center for the very first time.
This exciting milestone marks tremendous progress since we tore down the 1960s-era smokestacks that stood in its place only two years earlier. This new plant, which will begin providing power to you this summer, will use advanced combined-cycle technology that will bring with it a host of benefits for our customers.
The technology will cut by one third the amount of fuel we need to burn to generate electricity. Because of this fuel efficiency, we expect that the new plant will more than pay for itself with fuel savings, estimated at more than $1 billion over its 30-year life, helping us to continue to provide you reliable, clean power and the lowest electric bill in Florida.
Clear skies ahead
Additionally, there will be a considerable improvement in the skies overhead, as the new plant will cut air emissions by 90 percent. The cleaner plant will also cut in half the CO2 emissions rate — the equivalent of removing 46,000 cars from the road every year over the life of the plant!
Reaching for energy independence
Cape Canaveral is the first in a series of plant modernizations already on their way. By tearing down older, inefficient plants and replacing them with cleaner more efficient ones that use U.S.-produced natural gas, we’ve already reduced our dependence on oil by 97 percent–but, we’re not stopping there. We won’t be satisfied until we achieve 100 percent energy independence from foreign oil.
Continuing to make our plants more efficient will help us get there. Just down the coast from Cape Canaveral, we’re actively constructing a more efficient facility in Riviera Beach to replace the older one. Like Cape Canaveral, this plant will be cleaner and more efficient than the one it’s replacing, which will help to keep your electric bills low for years to come. We’ll also be tearing down our old Port Everglades plant this year to continue paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient energy future.
Any day we can work to secure a reliable and affordable energy future for Florida’s families and businesses is a day that’s worth getting excited about. In this new year and beyond, we’ll continue trying to make a difference by working to keep your bill the lowest in the state and always looking for new ways to serve you better. It’s our commitment to you today and tomorrow.
Best wishes from all of us here at FPL for a very happy and exciting New Year.

Thank you for all the good work you are doing and keep the bills low.
Happy Holidays to all.
FPL seems to be the only company trying to lower consumers bill by employing sense and technology. Keep up the good works.
to keep your bill the lowest in the state and offering ways for you to save even more.
Hi to one and all at FPL, just a line to thank you ALL for the service you give us.
Have a great Christmas and a Fantasic 2013..
Marj and Alex
change as many of your lighting fixtures to go on using motion monitors – do this especially in the areas where family or others sharing space leave lights on after leaving the area – this will save a lot of money over time. The one time investment pays back fast
Enjoyed the history lesson.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all at FPL!!!
So glad to see you all doing something to invest in the future of your business and your customers, while helping to alleviate our dependance on foriegn oil. Congrats FPL!!! and Thank you.
Sounds great! Thanks for doing something to help our enviornment! I hope these changes are not “to little to late”.
More energy efficient, lower costs, yet still increased pricing for the customers. Requests over and over to raise prices. If only there was competition for electricity, FPL would know what it’s like to listen to the customer and price accordingly.
Thanks FPL for the info!!! Very good job & Happy
Holiday to you also.
Thanks for the excellent service you have provided for me, since i’ve lived in Inverary. I have no concerns at this time, but rather would like to let you know you are appreciated.
I’m a Canadian with a condo in FL that I use four months of the year. FPL is great. Keep it up.
great anything to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and reduce electric bills esp to seniors. why cant fla get more aggressive in solar power for residential use and for senior citizens? i would put it on my roof if it were more affordable, would be great.
EXCELENT
Of course, I,m very happy that you will keep low price through 2013. as well.Thank you. But, even if you would be much more expencive than anothers – I,ll stay with you.I,ll never forget your kindness: 2 years ago I just bought a condo here in Lauderhill,FL,phoned you from my country (Germany) and asked you to connect the electricity,so when I come to Florida, I have electricity in my condo.Calling from Germany, my bad English, it was not easy for you to understand what I will and to explain you mz problem.I,m so happy, you understood immediately, you promissed ( and you kept your word)and it was this way – when I arrivet to Lauderhill-it was electricity in my apatrtment.
Thousend thanks, I,ll never forget your kindness and your professionalism. Thanks again!
Warmest regards,
Lilian Baic

Let’s get our students more actively involved to support the understanding for the neccessity of progress and advancing science to the efficient use of energy.
What a juxtaposition! “See how we’ll work to keep bills the lowest in the state.” vs “FPL’s typical residential bills will increase 5 cents a day…” in the same email. Oh, well, thankful to have the service.
Thanks for the update. Looks interesting. However the truth of the matter is that our number one concern is for FPL to keep the electric flowing with little or no outages.
Thank you FPL for your leadership role in the future of Florida energy planning.
It’s nice to know that my family’s energy needs will be well taken care of into the future.
That is very good news.Looking forward to receiving reliable service at an affordable price.
It would be good for our bills to be down some ite to much, thank you
Here’s an idea that could save a little on your electric bill. Since most of us spend a good part of the evening watching TV, try designating one lamp in the TV room to carry a low watt energy saving bulb. You may want a bright lamp to light a room, but when strictly watching TV they are often too bright, and can actually rob the TV’s colors. So shut them off and keep the low-glow lamp on instead.
Awesomw,my congratulation to FPL for all the effort you are doing to keep us bright(jaja) and our skies clean, good work, happy 2013
I wish New York would adopt your technology…Living in Fla & NY…I applaud FPL for it’s devotion to us, the customers and our budgets…no comparison to Con Edison in NY.
Great news,Clean energy and the power to keep the prices low.
This Christmas I wish to thank FPL for their extraordinary good service.
If service was disrupted during summer storms, if was returned quickly.
Thank you all!
Great work !!
THANK YOU FPL FOR THE GREAT JOB YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE AT FPL
congratulations!! keep up the good work!!!
This is great news. Congratulations! Cleaner air, lower cost to families for our future should be a priortiy for all to strive to achieve.
Thanks for sending this message. It combines valuable information about FPL.with the feel of a small town weekly.
It’s like having the CEO of the company dropping by for coffee.
anything that help the sociality to save money will help..T you!!
Very exciting news; thank you for the updates.
Way to go FPL!
Congratulations!!
I would like to read FPL’s hurricane preparedness plan.
Clean energy is the way to go to protect Florida and the air we breath.
Thanks for helping to make our earth a better, cleaner place for my family and future generations a safer place to live. The added cost savings are also a great plus.
I think it is great that you guys came up with ways to save Florida residents money with the economy doing bad it is just great that you have our best interest in mind as well as our health thank you once again.
Loved reading about your progress.Thank you so much for posting.
But in building this new power plant I hope you have considered the rising waters around the plant.
One day in our distant future FL will be under water but not yet. I can see in 20 years or so the water being considerably higher, just a thought…
Madison Gas & Electric Co. in Madison Wi. is giving away free florescent bulbs & different shower heads to cut down on the amt. of usage people are using. This is a great idea that I think FPL should consider doing. I believe they give 10 bulbs & 2 shower heads & then the rest is up to the individuals to go & buy mire for their home.
Tim I think you should take over our country and show Washington how you get the message. That to be good at what you do is to be the best at it everyday and your whole thought and attitude is it is about people to help them out. Keep upthe good work.
Please avoid the trap of using wind power and solar power. The energy produced does not cover the cost of service. “Feel good” solution generally are not cost effective.
Thank you,
Edward Rhodea
Thank you all who have made this possible!
F.P.L. COGRATULATIONS THE BEST.HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYBODY
Why doesn’t FPL use more solar and wind generating energy plants? I teach second grade and we are teaching about alternate sources of renewable energy. Is this something that FPL plans to use in the near future?
You guys and ladies are doing a great job !
Thanks for work for us, congratulations good job in the future, I’m happy for your excelent services.
felicitaciones.
I am glad to have moved to Florida, FPL it is the only company that has great ideas to lower their custumers bills
HAPPY HOLIDAYS

It feels good to know it is more than just a vision to move to cleaner, self-sustained energy, that steps have been taken and a plan is in place to move us to 100% energy independence!
Thank you for taking the initiative to do what the rest of the country needs to do in terms of energy independence! Great job to everybody who is building, designing, and dreaming up new ways to get more “green” with our power.
Thank you for the investment in our future.
Clean air and American independence is vital to this entire country.
Keep up the good work!
